But is all this technology good? With the ever changing design and function of today are longtime employees finding it hard to keep up? Is having information at the push of a button to risky?
"It was recently reported that the average business laptop held about $1 million of commercial data." (Standley (2006)) So what happens when an employee leaves their Blackberry on the train? Or their laptop gets stolen while at a coffee shop? While the company may be able to cut costs on physical items, what's the price to get it all the information back when it arrives in the wrong hands?
Of course with all the password protection equipped on most devices, do most of us ever use it? the hassle of typing in a code every time we receive a text, e-mail or when we want to display something send most of us up the wall including myself. However, most of us log out of our personal accounts such as our e-mail account, Facebook and other sites; but how many of us click "save our username and password" so we can cut that time off from typing it in?
If we are cutting costs on technology, there needs to be a more secure way of making sure that the data on a laptop or phone is safe and no one else has access to it but the owner if it is ever stolen or lost.
ReplyDeleteAnd to go with the Facebook point, especially if you are using public computers, such as at a library, you should learn to never hit the "save my username and password" button, because if you do forget to log off, then someone can easily get into your personal information and mess things around for the fun of it.
With technology changing right in front of our faces, it's important to understand that we need to be more careful of where we are and what we do with all our personal information in order to keep our lives safe in society today.
Technological development is advancing at an alarming speed that humans can hardly analyse its consequences. With the growing competition and rivalry, companies hardly wait to analyse the consequences before embracing the latest technology.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Amanda and Aaron, that it is right to be concerned about all that data out there that can be hacked into or lost on the web when a server crashes. These are concerns that should be addressed by companies and individuals opting to adopt technology (like work from home situations).
I think the statistic that every business laptop contains a million dollars of commercial data is exaggerated and blown out of proportion. If this was the case, every company would know what the next company is up to to amazing depth. In addition, every businessman would have a million dollar bounty on them and so, this statistic doesn't seem to realistic. Confidential information is usually kept a secret. In no way would a server containing highly important company information be connected to the internet.
ReplyDeleteWe cannot avoid such technological advancements in our daily life. I think people are well aware of the data and information held in their computers. I fully agree with Aaron that we need to be more careful for the safety and security of our information.
ReplyDeleteI think IT department of a business has responsibility to keep things safe and unreachable from the any potential theft.
To gain something, we need to lose something. We can gain being able to work from home or more flexibilities, but the result is having to be more careful with company information.
ReplyDeleteLike Deajoong said above, the time we gain something is the time we will lose something else. But the point is we have to know which one is more important? If benefits out weight weakness,we have to keep the technology and do something to deal the weakness.Never give up the advantage of the technology becasue of small disadvantages.
ReplyDeleteIn the last few decades technology in the workplace has improved tremendously. Some employees are asked to telecommute from their homes but they will be physically isolated and will lose their interpersonal skills such as communication skills and person to person relationships.
ReplyDeleteWe can never expect something perfect. Technology is something that will bring us advantages and disadvantages at the same time. We have to find out a way to balance both.
ReplyDeleteSedar, I guess with the ‘WikiLeaks’ issue, we have proof that however secret is the data, it can never be too safe.
ReplyDeleteAll software has loopholes and it is just a matter of time/money/intelligence before somebody finds the loophole and hacks into it.
I think the technology should be to help or have fun with, not to steal more money or control our world.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is a queer thing. it brings you great gifts with one hand, and it stabs you in the back with the other, like Deajoong and Yaqin said above.
ReplyDeleteWe just need to be careful with the information that is stored within the technology we carry with ourselves everyday. If someone is just careless with what they have, then something really bad can happen with all that data on that laptop or phone. People think that setting up unique passwords help, but there are so many hackers/hacking programs out there, that anything could be stolen and/or used against you.
ReplyDeleteIf that statistic is true, I would recommend to a business man carrying a laptop with such information to not be taking it to a public place to begin with and if they really hold such a big responsibility the job should not be given to such a person who would even accidentally leave their blackberry on a train. Technology is not something we can avoid because it helps us in so many ways however if we must use it, we must also be extremely responsible for the uses we make of it.
